Consisting of singers and guitarists Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, American indie folk duo The Milk Carton Kids are from Eagle Rock, California, and formed in early 2011. The duo was formed when Ryan saw Pattengale performing his own songs live and, after talking about how dissatisfied they felt with their solo careers, they decided to work together.
Retrospect, a live album recorded at Zoey's Cafe in Ventura, California, was released by the duo in March 2011 under the name Kenneth Pattengale & Joey Ryan. That same month, they performed at SXSW Festival, before joining Joe Purdy as his opening act and backing band on his North American tour.
2011: Prologue
Prologue – the band’s debut studio album and first released under their name – was released on July 19, 2011. Praised by The San Francisco Chronicle, the album made Daytrotter, American Songwriter, and About.com's year-end lists. "There By Your Side," a track from the album, was named National Public Radio's Song of the Day. Later in the year, to promote the album’s release, the duo embarked on a North American headline tour.
2013: The Ash and Clay
The Ash & Clay, the band’s second album, was released on Epitaph’s sister label ANTI- records on March 26, 2013. After the album’s release, they promoted it with a tour with Austin-based artist Sarah Jarosz and a taping of Austin City Limits that November.
2015: Monterey
The band’s third album, Monterey, was also released on ANTI- records. The album was released on May 19, 2015, and was a critical hit, receiving good reviews from both Rolling Stone and Paste Magazine.
2018: All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn’t Do
All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn't Do was released on June 29, 2018, on Anti- Records. The album garnered even higher praise from Rolling Stone than their last as a result of its emotional depth, drawing upon the band’s personal life experiences, which clearly influences the record.
2019: The Only Ones
The band’s sixth and most recent album, The Only Ones, was released on October 18, 2019, and was marketed and distributed by Thirty Tigers.
